Secondary Dominants Explained

A secondary dominant is a chord borrowed from outside a song's main key, built to function as the dominant (V) chord of some OTHER chord within that key rather than of the tonic itself. Every diatonic chord in a key, aside from the tonic, can be given its own temporary "borrowed" V chord this way, and the notation makes the relationship explicit: V/ii (read "five of two") is the dominant chord that resolves specifically to the ii chord, V/V is the dominant of the dominant, V/vi is the dominant of the relative minor, and so on for every diatonic chord that isn't already the tonic.
