Extended Chords
Extended chords keep stacking 3rds past the 7th that defines a plain 7th chord: a 9th chord adds a 9th (14 semitones, i.e. a major 2nd an octave up), an 11th chord adds an 11th (17 semitones, a perfect 4th an octave up) on top of that, and a 13th chord adds a 13th (21 semitones, a major 6th an octave up) on top of that — each one is, strictly, a 7th chord with one, two, or three more 3rd-stacked notes above it. In principle a full 13th chord has seven distinct notes; in real playing practice almost nobody voices all seven, which is exactly why Chord Extensions (the theory page this hub links to constantly) exists as a separate topic — the compromises real musicians make when voicing these chords are as important as the theoretical stack itself.
Add9 sits apart from the 9/11/13 family despite sharing the word "9" in its name, and this is one of the most genuinely useful distinctions in this whole hub: a real 9th chord is built by extending a 7th chord (so it always includes that 7th), while an add9 chord adds the 9th directly to a plain triad and skips the 7th entirely. Cadd9 and C9 sound noticeably different for exactly this reason — C9 carries the dominant 7th's pulling, unresolved quality, while Cadd9 keeps the plain major triad's stability with just a little extra color layered on top. Extended chords are where jazz harmony's reputation for "lots of notes" genuinely comes from — a ii-V-I progression voiced with m9, 13, and maj9 chords instead of plain minor, dominant, and major 7ths is a real, characteristic jazz comping choice, not decoration. R&B and neo-soul draw on the same extended vocabulary; funk and gospel keyboard playing leans on 9th and 13th chords for their thick, churning color. Extended chords are comparatively rare in genres built around simpler harmonic movement (folk, punk, most classic rock), which is a real, honest reason these pages see less search volume than the plain triads and 7ths — they're a real and useful part of the vocabulary, just not where a beginner starts.

In practice, the most common real-world compromise on a 9th, 11th, or 13th chord is to drop the root (a bass instrument or the left hand usually covers it anyway) and, on an 11th or 13th specifically, the 5th as well, since the 5th adds the least distinctive color of any note in the stack. What's left after those omissions — 3rd, 7th, and the named extension — is usually enough to make the chord instantly recognizable by ear, which is exactly why professional voicings so rarely match the full theoretical stack note-for-note. A guitarist voicing a 13th chord across six strings, for instance, will often play only four or five distinct pitches total, sometimes omitting the 9th and 11th along the way and keeping just root, 3rd, 7th, and 13th.
The 11th chord carries a specific voicing trap worth naming directly: played as a literal, unaltered stack on a major-quality chord, the natural 11th sits a half-step above the 3rd and clashes with it badly — which is why real 11th chord voicings on a dominant or major-family root very often raise that 11th to a sharp 11 or simply omit the 3rd, an adjustment jazz musicians make instinctively that a purely theoretical reading of "11th chord" wouldn't predict.
Numbering in this family follows the scale degree the chord's highest added note represents when counted past a full octave — a 9th is the 2nd scale degree counted an octave higher (hence 9, not 2), an 11th is the 4th scale degree an octave up (hence 11, not 4), and a 13th is the 6th scale degree an octave up (hence 13, not 6). This is why the numbers jump from 7 straight to 9, skipping 8 entirely — 8 would just be the octave itself, which every chord already implicitly contains and doesn't need naming as an extension.
Extended dominant chords are frequently altered as well as extended in jazz harmony — a dominant 7#9, 7b9, or 7#11 raises or lowers one of these upper extensions by a semitone for extra tension before resolution, a genuinely distinct technique from the plain (unaltered) 9/11/13 chords this hub documents. Extended chords interact with a song's melody in a way plain triads and 7ths often don't have to worry about as much: a 9th, 11th, or 13th adds a note that may already be present in the vocal or lead melodic line, and a skilled arranger deliberately chooses which extension to voice underneath a given melody note so the chord reinforces rather than clashes with what's being sung or played on top — a real, practical reason professional arrangers reach for extended chords deliberately rather than simply "adding more notes" for density's own sake.
Extended chords are frequently the first genuinely "advanced-sounding" harmonic vocabulary a self-taught player reaches for once open chords and barre chords feel comfortable, and there's a real reason that jump feels significant rather than incremental: moving from a triad to a 7th chord adds one note and one new interval relationship to think about, but moving from a triad to a 9th, 11th, or 13th chord means reasoning about a five-, six-, or seven-note stack and which of those notes actually need to be present for the chord to read correctly — a genuinely bigger conceptual leap than the step from triads to plain 7ths.
Because extended chords share so many notes with simpler chords built on different roots (a C9 chord, for instance, contains all the notes of a G major triad among its five tones), they're also a natural entry point into chord substitution thinking — recognizing that an extended chord already "contains" a simpler, more familiar chord inside it is often the fastest way to make sense of an unfamiliar extended chord symbol on a lead sheet. Recording and production contexts matter for this family in a way worth being direct about: in a full band or produced-track context, extended chords are frequently voiced by one instrument (piano or guitar) while a bass player covers the root and a separate melodic instrument or vocal covers the top extension, meaning no single player necessarily plays every note of the theoretical stack at once — the "full" 9th, 11th, or 13th chord this hub documents is often a genuine ensemble effect rather than one musician's single voicing, which is a real, practical reason a solo player's voicing on these pages so often looks incomplete next to the full theoretical chord and still sounds correct in context.
Funk keyboard and guitar comping in particular treats this hub's 9th and 13th chords as rhythmic, percussive stabs as much as sustained harmonic color — short, tightly articulated hits rather than long-held chords, which is a genuinely different use of the same notes documented here than the sustained, atmospheric role extended chords often play in ballads or ambient jazz. Solo guitarists and solo pianists — without a bass player or second harmony instrument to lean on — face the opposite problem and have to make deliberate choices about which notes carry the chord's identity on their own; this is genuinely why solo jazz guitar and solo jazz piano arrangements so often favor economical extended-chord voicings (typically four to five notes covering root or bass note, 3rd, 7th, and the one extension that matters most) rather than attempting the full theoretical stack in a single hand or shape.
